Attempting to bring up a prenuptial agreement with your future spouse may make you feel uncomfortable. You may worry that it will offend him or her and lead to issues in your relationship.

The State Bar of Texas explains that there is a good way to approach the subject that will help to soothe concerns and make it easier for you to show your future spouse that a prenuptial agreement is a good idea.

Joint effort

One of the first things you need to do is ensure you make the creation of the agreement a joint effort. If you bring a prepared agreement to your partner, it can create hostility because he or she had no part in creating it. It makes it very one-sided, which is not attractive to the other person.

Work together to create the document so that you both have input. It makes it much easier to reach something that you both like and will sign.

Mutually beneficial

You also want to stress how a prenuptial agreement can be mutually beneficial. Make sure that you explain how it protects your partner. You need to give him or her the chance to see the benefits, which you cannot do if you push a prepared document on your partner.

Make sure to include things he or she wants. Consider his or her needs. Think about potential assets he or she may have that would require protecting. Plus, keep in mind that your prenuptial agreement can cover more than just assets and finances. You can include other provisions that benefit your future spouse.

Many people think negatively about prenuptial agreements because they see them as planning for a divorce. You have to position the idea in a different way to make it attractive to your partner.
