Why strong communication is important for custody schedules

On Behalf of | Aug 31, 2023 | Child Custody |

Divorce can be difficult for children, but parents may make it more tolerable by creating a good custody schedule. A well-made custody schedule can incorporate how each parent is involved in their children’s upbringing while also clarifying what’s expected from the other parent.

One way to make a strong custody schedule is by constantly communicating. This can be hard for parents who may hold some resentment and anger toward the other. However, good communication when making custody schedules is often intended to benefit their children. Here’s how that can be done:

Understanding what’s expected from each parent

Each parent should have some idea of how they want to be involved in their children’s lives and what they expect the other parent to do. For instance, each parent may expect to see their children often. By creating a schedule, each parent could have bi-daily, -weekly or -monthly custody. How often each parent sees their children often depends on their work and school schedules.

Making changes to a daily schedule

Once a custody schedule is made, each parent is expected to keep up their responsibilities. However, life can sometimes get in the way of responsibilities. In other words, a custody schedule may need to be adjusted.

For example, one parent may have created a custody schedule that works around their work schedule. However, if their work schedule suddenly changes and they’re working later in the day, it could conflict with a custody schedule. Talking to the other parent may help resolve this issue without any major conflicts.
