Everyone Deserves A Fresh Start

The Latest With Lewis – June 2025

On June 11, our team at Katie L. Lewis, P.C. Family Law enjoyed a refreshing and creative break from the day-to-day as we hosted a special team building event right here at the firm. We welcomed Andrea, the talented florist and owner of All Petals, who led us through a hands-on floral arrangement class. With her guidance, each team member had the opportunity to create a beautiful, personalized bouquet while learning floral design tips and techniques. It was a relaxing and inspiring experience that brought plenty of smiles—and the office has never smelled better!
To complement the afternoon, we enjoyed an assortment of snacks and charcuterie provided by MunchBox, a favorite East Dallas company known for their delicious and artfully arranged grazing boards. The combination of blooms, bites, and time together made for a wonderful midweek boost, reminding us of the importance of connection, creativity, and community in the workplace.

How Does Texas Handle Child Custody?

Child custody in Texas focuses on the best interests of the child. The law encourages parents to share custody and make decisions that benefit the child’s well-being. When you face custody decisions, it helps to understand the types and factors involved.

  • Types Of Custody: Texas uses two main custody terms: conservatorship and possession. Conservatorship refers to the legal right to make decisions about the child’s life, like education, health and religion. Possession deals with the physical time the child spends with each parent.
  • Factors The Court Considers: The court looks at many factors to decide custody, always putting the child’s best interest first. These include the child’s age, physical and emotional needs, the parents’ ability to care for the child, and the child’s preference if they are old enough. The court also reviews any history of abuse or neglect.

Good News

pride
In early June, Dallas-based nonprofit Badge of Pride launched a landmark exhibition at the Irving Archives & Museum, presenting one of Texas’s most extensive artifact-driven explorations of LGBTQ+ history. Running through late September 2025, the exhibit—titled Badge of Pride: From Silence…To Celebration! —showcases more than a century of queer history in North Texas. Visitors can expect to encounter early protest buttons, Stonewall-era memorabilia, artifacts connected to Harvey Milk, and even a North Texas panel from the National AIDS Memorial Quilt.
Designed not just to inform but also to inspire, the exhibit is structured around four guiding themes: the forging of identity, resistance and activism, surviving the AIDS crisis, and celebrating pride and visibility. Accompanied by community events and a speaker series, it serves as a powerful educational resource and a celebration of progress. For our firm’s Dallas community, Badge of Pride’s debut is a meaningful reminder of the resilience, courage, and ongoing efforts toward equality within LGBTQ+ history—making it a must-see experience this summer.

Pet Spotlight: Help Find a Loving Home

dog
This month, we’ve partnered with Cody’s Friends Rescue to feature Gordon , affectionately known as Mr. Beans , a loving Plott Hound mix with a heart full of affection and a few special needs.

Gordon is a young male Plott Hound who thrives on companionship and snuggles. He was born with epilepsy, but his condition is well-managed with regular medication—he’s otherwise bright, playful, and sweet. Gordon enjoys gentle playtime and chilling on the couch with someone who cares. Fully house-trained and crate-ready, he’s also great with other dogs and would love a calm, patient home that can offer him the consistent care and love he deserves. Gordon is a true sweetheart and a perfect match for someone ready to open their heart to a special pup!
