On May 16, 2024, Katie L. Lewis, P.C. Family Law sponsored the Dallas Association of Young Lawyers’ “Trial by Trivia” event. Every year, the DAYL has a leadership class that puts on an event to raise money for a nonprofit. This year, the 2023-2024 DAYL Leadership Class benefitted Children’s Health.

Trial by Trivia was at the Community Beer Co. and the competition had twelve teams participating. The team with the most fun name was “Do You Like Subpoena-coladas”. The event was attended by two of our attorneys, Kassie Hines and Desiree Veca, who each had an absolute blast!

Five Common Mistakes to Avoid During a Divorce

Divorce can be mentally draining. Emotions naturally run high during such a monumental time, making unhealthy decisions more likely.

Understanding and avoiding the most common divorce mistakes is key to reducing conflict and protecting one’s interests.

  1. Not Planning For Financial Independence: When going through a divorce, one must put extra time into preparing for the inevitable fiscal changes. This means closely scrutinizing every income variable and planning a budget that makes sense for a single-income household. It is also wise to establish individual credit. Opening separate bank accounts prevents a variety of potential disputes.
  2. Overlooking Tax Implications: Many people neglect to consider how divorce will affect their taxes. Different aspects of the settlement, such as alimony and division of assets, can have significant consequences. Anyone experiencing a divorce must assess the possible impact these outcomes may have.
  3. Letting Emotions Take Over: Divorce can be heart-wrenching, but allowing feelings to control decision-making often leads to regrettable choices. It is wiser to approach divorce matters with a clear and rational mindset… Read More

Learning that your spouse wants a divorce can be a profound shock. The announcement may trigger a range of emotions from confusion to despair.

How you react in the coming days can massively impact how the situation unfolds. Approach the initial stages of this monumental life change with caution and wisdom.

  • Stay Calm and Seek Clarity: Your first reaction might be highly emotional. Even if this is the case, try to maintain your composure. Calmly ask your spouse to explain the reasons for wanting a divorce. Understanding your soon-to-be-ex’s thought process can help you grasp the situation better.

1,507-acre RGK Ranch of Land

In a remarkable act of generosity, the Kozmetsky family in Texas turned down a lucrative $130 million offer from developers to sell their 1,507-acre RGK Ranch. Instead, they chose to sell the land to Travis County for $90 million, ensuring its transformation into a public park. This decision not only preserves the natural beauty of the area but also provides a valuable recreational space for the community, promoting environmental stewardship and enhancing the region’s protected areas.

The new park, expected to open in 2025 or 2026, is a significant win for conservation efforts in Texas. By prioritizing community welfare and environmental preservation over profit, the Kozmetsky family has set a powerful example of altruism and long-term thinking. Their contribution will leave a lasting legacy, offering residents and visitors alike a place to connect with nature and enjoy outdoor activities for generations to come. This inspiring story underscores the impact of thoughtful, community-oriented decision-making in land conservation.
