In 2023, the Galapagos Conservancy successfully reintroduced over 500 giant tortoises across four islands in the Galapagos, marking a significant achievement in conservation. This effort included species like the critically endangered Chelonoidis hoodensis. Additionally, researchers discovered that the giant tortoises’ grazing habits help create open spaces beneficial for the island’s waved albatrosses.

Supported by over $6 million in donations, the Conservancy plans to continue restoring tortoise populations and habitats, demonstrating the profound interconnectedness of the Galapagos ecosystem.
