The Latest With Lewis – April 2025
We are proud to share that our own attorney, M.K. Kassie Hines recently served as a guest lecturer at Oklahoma City School of law where she spoke to the law students enrolled in Alternative Dispute Resolution Family Law course about the mediation process and settlement negotiations. This marks the second consecutive year that Ms. Hines has been invited to present on the proper preparation and effective presentation of family law matters in mediation.
Drawing from her extensive experience, Ms. Hines provided students with practical tips, proven techniques, and real-world insights into the mediation process. Her discussion covered both in-person and Zoom mediations—an increasingly important aspect of modern practice—making her presentation particularly relevant and impactful.
Students praised the session for its depth and usefulness, and the course professor once again received rave reviews following her lecture. Ms. Hines’ dual licensure in both Texas and Oklahoma added unique value to the discussion, especially for the Texas-based students in attendance.
We’re honored to have Ms. Hines represent the firm and contribute to the education of the next generation of family law professionals.

Can I Move Away from Dallas with My Kids if We Have Joint Custody?
When faced with the opportunity to relocate in order to take a new job, divorced parents with joint custody in Dallas may find themselves in a complex legal situation. Parents in this situation often wonder whether they have to get special court permission to move away, or if it’s sufficient to get the agreement of their ex-spouse. Understanding the legal requirements of such a move is crucial to avoid running afoul of a court order and inviting further legal problems.
- – Understanding Joint Custody and Relocation: Joint custody, which is more commonly referred to as “joint managing conservatorship” in Texas, involves both parents sharing the rights and responsibilities of raising their children. This arrangement often includes a detailed custody order outlining each parent’s rights, including visitation schedules and decision-making authority. When one parent wishes to relocate, this custody order needs to be modified through the proper channels.

But is relying on AI a good idea? Let’s explore how these tools can both help and hurt the divorce process in Texas.
- -AI as a Helpful Tool: AI tools are becoming more common in divorce proceedings. These tools can save time and reduce stress during an already difficult period. They can also help keep emotions in check by providing objective analysis of personal and financial matters.

Pet Spotlight: Help Find a Loving Home

This month, we’ve partnered with Cody’s Friends Rescue to feature a couple adorable animals who are ready to become a cherished part of your family.
On the left, meet Keith, and on the right, meet his brother, Ricky. They are about 4 months old and weigh around 17 pounds. With their playful energy and curious nature, they are the perfect companions for an active household ready to embrace the joys of puppyhood.
Like all young puppies, they are still learning the basics of house training and good manners, so they’ll need a patient and dedicated family to help them grow into well-behaved adult dogs. They get along well with other dogs and would thrive in a home where they have plenty of playtime, training, and love.
Both puppies are expected to be medium-sized when fully grown.
Adoptions at Cody’s Friends Rescue are free and include spay/neuter, age-appropriate vaccinations, microchip, and more.
